AFR 1501: Seminar in Current Community Problems (1 section Asynchronous – Fully-Online)

This long-standing course in AFR examines the sociological, political, psychological and economic challenges within Black American communities, with some attention given to New York City. The course materials include, but are not limited to, 1619, Jim Crow, busing, food deserts, police brutality, redlining, the prison industrial complex, gentrification, and now COVID-19. Students will also consider how institutions like the black family and the black church as well as movements like Civil Rights, #MeToo, and Black Lives Matter address issues and problems facing Black communities.

The African American Studies Department seeks a candidate to deliver instruction for this undergraduate 1000-level AFR course. Teaching experience in Africana Studies and/or related disciplines at the college level are a must for AFR 1501Preference will be given to a candidate with interdisciplinary approaches to instruction in the African Diaspora. The successful candidate must be prepared to engage in thoughtful discussions with students about recent national uprisings and Covid-19.The successful candidate must employ interactive instructional models as well as digital tools into the course, which is taught fully-online in Fall 2020. For instance, the candidate must have experience and possess a level of comfort using Blackboard and other online distance learning systems. Additional online training support is available.
