Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies Pre-doctoral FellowThe Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies at the University of Virginia invites applications from scholars whose research focuses broadly on Africa and the African Diaspora, including but not limited to North America, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the African subcontinent. Special consideration will be given to applicants whose research is interdisciplinary in perspective. The two-year fellowship carries an annual stipend of $24,000, plus health insurance and is open to qualified candidates regardless of citizenship or current residence. Applicants must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation prior to August 1, 2021. Please note: individuals may not apply for the Woodson pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships in the same year. Fellows must be in residence at the University of Virginia for the entire award period and are expected to participate in a series of workshops throughout the academic year. They may accept no employment, fellowships, or consulting obligations during the fellowship period without the Director’s approval. Research Associates receive funding for two years (beginning August 1, 2021 and ending July 31, 2023). In addition to research, post-doctoral associates will teach one course each year of the residency. The appointment carries the title of Research Associate and Lecturer and pays an annual (12 month) salary of $47,500, plus full-time benefits and is open to qualified candidates regardless of citizenship or current residence. Applicants must have Ph.D. in hand by July 2021 and have received their PhD no earlier than 2015. Research Associates must be in residence at the University of Virginia for the entire award period and are expected to participate in a series of workshops throughout the academic year.
