Duties:

The Department of Black Studies at the State University of New York at New Paltz invites applications for a visiting Associate or Full Professor of Black Studies (3-year term) who will serve as interim department chair, which includes limited summer responsibilities. Having celebrated its 50th anniversary, the Department of Black Studies is one of the first and oldest of its kind in the nation and it seeks a dynamic and experienced scholar to move forward as it builds on a distinguished history. The area of specialization is open but should fall within the within the broad areas of history, humanities, political science, psychology of the Black Diaspora or Africa/African Studies. Appointment will begin in August 2021.

In addition to teaching three courses per year, the ideal candidate will foster departmental growth, curricular revision, and faculty mentorship. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a strong scholarly history and agenda commensurate with rank, academic leadership experience/skills, and the desire to contribute to the life and work of the department and the college.

Qualifications:

Required:
Ph.D. in Black Studies, Africana Studies, or another relevant field with a focus on Black or Critical Race Studies as the foundation of research, and chair/director or equivalent experience.

Preferred:
Post-secondary teaching experience (including remote instructional delivery), mentoring tenure-track faculty, and experience mentoring and/or advising students with diverse backgrounds are highly desired.
