The UCLA Department of Gender Studies is pleased to seek applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the field of Black gender studies. We are interested in candidates with expertise in one or more of the following fields: Black feminism; Black queer studies; Black trans studies; anti-Black sexual or gendered medical violence or health precarity; historical or ongoing institutions and practices of Black healing, aid, and care; reproductive justice. We encourage applications from interdisciplinary scholars and candidates in all disciplines of study working in Black studies in any national or transnational context. We invite scholars whose work provides original ways of understanding the nexus of gendered and anti-Black dispossession or subordination and/or the gendered production of Black life that exceeds or challenges configurations of racial harm. Several faculty in the Department of Gender Studies have research investments in Black feminism and Black queer studies, and we are eager to build on these existing strengths, to continue to grow these fields at UCLA, and to support the development of scholars in this intellectual and political arena. Completed applications must be received by February 15, 2021 and include: 1) A cover letter that discusses the candidate’s research in the field of Black gender studies, teaching experience and interests, and any other relevant experience; 2) a statement that indicates the applicant’s investments and contributions to equity, diversity and inclusion- including research or related work that challenges racism and/or other forms of entrenched subordination such as sexism and homo/ transphobia; 3) a CV; 4) the names of 3-4 references; and 5) a writing sample of 20-25 pages that represents the candidate’s research areas and methodological strengths in the field of Black gender studies. A J.D. or PhD is required. Target start date: July 1, 2021. UCLA has programs to assist in partner employment, childcare, schooling and other family concerns. For additional information, visit the UCLA Academic Personnel Office website or the UC Office of the President’s website. The Department is particularly interested in candidates with a commitment to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students of color, queer, and trans students.
