Position Rank: Full Time Tenure Stream – Assistant Professor Department of English The Department of English, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Literatures of the African Diaspora in North America at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2021. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval. The successful candidate will have a PhD by the position start date of 1 July 2021, in English Literature or a related field, with a specialization in any of the North American literatures of the African Diaspora in English, including African-American, Black Canadian, and Black Caribbean literature; a demonstrated record of excellence in research and in university teaching; and a clearly articulated program of ongoing research activity. Applications from specialists in any historical period are welcome. We are particularly interested in candidates who have demonstrated expertise in critical race theory, Postcolonial theory, and/or World Literature, and those whose research is interdisciplinary, intermedial, and/or transhistorical in focus. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative research at the highest level and to pursue external funding opportunities. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence of a recognized international calibre as demonstrated in the research statement; a record of significant publications or forthcoming publications in the field; presentations at major conferences; and strong recommendations from referees. The successful candidate will be invited to contribute to York University’s Black Canadian Studies Certificate Program, where they will join a dynamic community of faculty and students with shared interests in the study of Black cultures across North America, and to participate in the shaping of a Black Studies major. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through a teaching dossier, which may include a statement of teaching philosophy, copies of teaching evaluations, and sample syllabi. The position will involve curricular development in the area of specialization, graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate will be eligible for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Pedagogical innovation in such priority areas as experiential education and technology-enhanced learning would be an asset.
