Area of Research: AfroSonic cultures across the African diaspora

Description: The Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) is a vibrant department that brings together a wealth of artistic and academic activity under one umbrella. The department provides opportunities for scholars who want to explore a variety of artistic and academic endeavours by focusing on a single discipline, or following a number of interdisciplinary offerings that are unique to the campus. UTSC is located in the eastern border of the city of Toronto, surrounded by the lushness and beauty of one of Ontario’s environmental treasures, the Rouge National Urban Park.

We seek a dynamic emerging scholar, with PhD in hand, to take up the position of Postdoctoral Fellow in our department, with a focus on music and music cultures from within a Black Studies framework. We welcome applicants from a variety of traditional disciplines such as Sociology, Geography, Musicology, English Literature, Philosophy as well as interdisciplinary scholars working across a number of fields such as, but not limited to Cultural Studies, the Digital Humanities, Theatre & Performance Studies, Gender Studies or Caribbean Studies. The Department of Arts, Culture and Media will offer the successful candidate access to office space, a plethora of professional development opportunities and access to the university’s multiple and vast library collections.

Required qualifications: This fellowship award is open to both domestic and international post-graduate applicants. Nominees must:

• Demonstrate academic excellence and high potential for success in their chosen fields;
• Identify as having lived experience in Black communities
• Have obtained a doctoral degree, normally within the last five years from the start date of the funding, or will have obtained the degree at the time the fellowship commences; and
• Not have held a UTSC Inclusive Excellence Postdoctoral Fellowship or a Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship, previously.

Salary: $70,000 per year

FTE: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week for a full-time postdoctoral fellow (pro-rated for those holding a partial appointment) recognizing that the needs of the employee’s
research and training and the needs of the supervisor’s research program may require flexibility in the performance of the employee’s duties and hours of work.

Employment as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto is covered by the terms of the CUPE 3902 Unit 5 Collective Agreement.
