Job Function
Under the direction of the Director of BCRW, the Associate Director oversees the day-to-day functioning of the office; plays a major role in developing the Center’s programming and speaker series; works with the Director on writing grants and building partnerships locally in New York City, nationally and transnationally with academic and activist organizations. The Associate Director serves as Editor of the Center’s webjournal, Scholar & Feminist Online. The Associate Director will also develop a research project, based on their own research interests and expertise as these align with BCRW’s social justice feminist mission, and create the plan and framework for that project in collaboration with others at BCRW.
Essential Duties Summary
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Center.
- Supervises the undergraduate student research assistants, including matching the student researchers with Center projects—both those initiated by the Center and those undertaken by BCRW Social Justice Initiative residents and partners.
- Collaborates with the Director and other members of the BCRW staff on setting goals and priorities for public programming, digital and multimedia publications, and academic/activist partnerships.
- Serves as Editor for The Scholar and Feminist Online, including working with the Director and the Managing Editor to refresh the journal’s editorial board, assess and potentially redesign its process for soliciting new work, and address longer-term planning for the journal.
- Develops a collaborative research project, based on their own areas of interest and expertise, to complement or supplement current projects at BCRW (which include poverty and public housing, transnational feminisms, abolitionist feminisms, transformative and restorative justice, and mutual aid).
- Researches possible grant funding to support special projects and, as needed, drafts proposals in consultation with the Director and the Development Office.
- Works with the Director to sustain and develop meaningful collaborative projects with other academic centers at Barnard and with activist partners.
- Undertakes other projects as needed and negotiated.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of issues relevant to contemporary national and transnational feminist movements and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies.
- Excellent administrative skills, including careful attention to detail
- Ability to work closely and collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and activist partners
- Ability to edit a robust peer-reviewed and multi-media scholarly journal, managing the peer-review process and collaborating with the managing editor and copy editor
- Ability to write for a wide range of audiences, both specialist and non-specialist, academic and activist
- Ability to develop new and independent projects, and to build sustained and sustainable working groups
- Flexibility and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively
Required Qualification Summary
- Ph.D. in a relevant humanities or social science field or terminal advanced degree in a relevant professional discipline; activist or community organizing experience is especially welcome
- 5 to 7 years of related work experience
- Relevant administrative, editorial, and organizational experience
