Ebony Jones
Associate Professor of History After working as a licensed practical nurse for ten years, Ebony Jones pursued graduate studies in the humanities, earning a Ph.D. in history from New York University in 2017. Currently an Associate Professor of History at North Carolina State University, her teaching and research interests center on the African Diaspora and Atlantic world slavery. Prof. Jones's manuscript, Slavery’s Dangerous Characters: Punishment and Black Mobile Existence in Jamaica’s Atlantic World (forthcoming, University of Pennsylvania Press), examines the use of transportation as discipline for enslaved people convicted by slave courts in the British Caribbean. Her relationship with the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora (ASWAD) began in 2010–11 as a first-year Ph.D. student at NYU, when she found in ASWAD a transformative sanctuary and a safe space for Black scholarship where her nascent work was genuinely valued and taken seriously by established scholars. As a member of the Board of Directors, she is looking forward to continuing this commitment to the association and its mission. |
