Kim D. Butler, President
Kim D. Butler is an associate professor of history and former chairperson (2003-06) at Rutgers University in the Department of Africana Studies. She is currently a Fulbright Scholar in Brazil (2014-15). A specialist in Afro-Brazilian history, she has also done extensive work on comparative diaspora theory in addition to her ongoing projects on Brazil. She has published numerous book chapters and her articles have appeared in Diaspora, The African Studies Review, The Americas, Slavery and Abolition, and the Journal of Black Studies. Her 1998 book, Freedoms Given, Freedoms Won: Afro-Brazilians in Post Abolition São Paulo and Salvador, received awards from the American Historical Association and the Association of Black Women Historians. She has long worked to help bring academic scholarship to the public sector as president of the African Cultural Heritage Exchange, a host of WPFW radio’s “Berimbau” show in Washington, a guest curator at the Smithsonian Institution, and other public history projects. She has been a member of ASWAD since its founding, and joined the Executive Board in 2007. She chaired the Program Committee for ASWAD’s conference in Ghana (2009), and was elected Director in 2011. Under the revised constitution, she currently serves as ASWAD President.
