Monica Lima
MONICA LIMA is a PhD in History, and has been studying African History since 1985. She has long experience in teaching and researching Afro-Brazilian History and has also conducted research in African historical archives (Angola and Senegal), and also in colonial sources in Europe – including the CAOM (Centre des Archives d’Outre-Mer) in Aix-en-Provence, France. Since 1992, she has prepared many Brazilian teachers to work with African History in schools of different parts of the country. Her most recent research project, concerning the connections in the Americas of Africans who returned to Africa in XIX century, has been presented in forums and at a recent (2008) international conference titled “Back to Africa,” sponsored by the CASAS (Centre for Advanced Studies for African Societies), in South Africa. She coordinates the Department of History at CAp/UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One of her most recent publications was a chapter in Paul Tyambe Zeleza’s book, The Study of Africa, published by CODESRIA (Dakar) in 2007, entitled “Let the drums sound: the teaching of African History and the History of Africans in Brazil.”
